DAILY EXCURSION
DURATION: whole day.
Closed to the public for the last ten years, the ancient oasis of El Arag is an off-the-beaten-track highlight. At about 150 km southeast of Siwa, once an important oasis with Roman temples and rock-cut tombs, it is now a quiet and rarely visited site, offering a glimpse into the region’s forgotten history and untouched desert landscape.
THE TRIP
After a drive of about 1.5 hours through beautiful desert landscapes, you arrive at the canyon where ruins of a Roaman temple add to the imagination. On both sides of the sharp rock formation, countless tombs hold mysteries, some of them still with original decorations. Explore hidden tombs while lunch is prepared under the palm trees. Head out to discover the surroundings and natural beauty with your local desert guide.
As you return to Siwa, stop to enjoy the sunset with a cup of Libyan tea. Unwind with a swim in the thermal waters at the hot spring camp, where a freshly prepared traditional dinner awaits you. End your day surrounded by nature, perhaps even joining a local Siwan party.
